The challenge of unwanted materials in Paddy Rice

Most farmers in the north of the country face the challenge of unwanted foreign materials which forms part of the harvested/trashed rice.Most often,rice produced in the north of the country is contaminated with stones,weeds, sand etc.It is therefore important that in the process  of developing value chains in the northern sector of the country, attention is paid to the production of rice that is free from foreign materials.

Strives for Value Chain Development in Northern Ghana

Owing to the relevance of the value chain concept in Agricultural development, Governmental and Non Governmental Organizations in the northern region are implementing projects in Agricultural Value Chain Development so as to better organize the the various actors needed for the development of the Agricultural sector in the region.Among these organization include: The Northern Rural Growth Program (NRGP), The Rice Sector support Project (RSSP), The Agricultural Development and Value Chain Enhancement Project (ADVANCE) etc.It is however important that these projects focus on developing and enhancing the value chains that they will create so as to make the needed impact in developing Agriculture in the region.

Parboiling of rice is a process of processing  rice, which involves series of activities aimed at re-adjusting the  moisture content of the paddy rice; so as to ensure less breakages during mailing and also to enrich the rice with the needed nutrients.In the north of the country, it is mainly under taken by women with varying processing skills.

Rice Production in Northern Ghana

In Ghana, 60% of rice production is under taken in the north of the country.In the same vain, the northern sector of the country is endowed with fertile lowlands and uplands suitable for the production of rice.The production of the commodity in the region is mainly rained with some level of irrigation in the northern and upper east regions of the country. This blog seeks to communicate the rapid development of the rice value chain in the north of Ghana, and to present, thus bringing to the fore the huge potentials in the industry for Investors.
